Bought an Edimax-N150 EW-7611ULB after being unable to install a different one, specifically as I was able to find how-to's on installing the edimax on linux.

However,

... does not result in device beeing usable, showing up in WiFi list or anything of that sorts. No errors, either.

I also have checked all ticks except "Source code" in "Ubuntu Software" tab of Software & Updates, selected "Main server" in the dropdown, but no entries show up in the Aditional Drivers tab.

Am I supposed to add the device to some boot sequence, anything like that?

Even though I'd describe myself as nerdy, I'm pretty new to linux, so please don't assume I know stuff "anyone should know when using linux".

  • A long shot, but it's worth a try: I had quite a few attempts at installing the previous one. Is there a way to make sure I reset all WiFi related settings to defaults? – tao Aug 10 '18 at 12:44

  • @chili555, I realized after I posted the above answer the device wasn't read when I first typed the `dmesg` command: here's the output: `[37269.868723] [drm:radeon_crtc_page_flip_target [radeon]] flip-ioctl() cur_rbo = 000000002bcbb647, new_rbo = 0000000065068503`.   • I've found [this](https://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-bluetooth/msg74927.html). It says: *"The WiFi driver should be rtl8xxxu instead of the out-of-tree rtl8723bu, but rtl8xxxu does not work just by adding the VID:PID. The rtl8xxxu maintainer has already been contacted regarding this. In any case, the bluetooth side works fine."* Does this have anything to do with `18.04`? – tao Aug 10 '18 at 22:45
  • I tried the [DKMS](https://github.com/lwfinger/rtl8723bu#automatic-install-using-dkms) method. It ended up in `Good news! Module version v4.3.8_12175.20140902 for 8812au.ko exactly matches what is already found in kernel 4.15.0-31-generic. DKMS will not replace this module. You may override by specifying --force.` I still don't see the device in Settings > WiFi panel. What does "`override by specific --force`" mean? (I know what *"Good news!"* means :D) – tao Aug 10 '18 at 22:57
  • The driver 8812au is incorrect for your device so the DKMS process involving that exact driver will be ineffective in any event. *rtl8xxxu* as it is currently written, doesn't cover your device; even if it did, as you noted, it is confirmed as not working. Please reboot the machine with the device inserted. Did the driver load? `lsmod | grep 8723` If not, load it: `sudo modprobe 8723bu` Check the log for errors or warnings: `dmesg | grep 8723` – chili555 Aug 11 '18 at 13:00
