I just wanted to ask question about Ubuntu 21.04 which is I'm currently running.

1-2 hours ago I tried to shutdown my laptop using GUI (not from terminal). Everything was good until i accidentally pressed INSERT button (Note on my laptop 0 button of my numpad is also INSERT button) then shutdown logs showed up.

I knew that we can see shutdown logs by pressing ESC key. After that logs disappeared and screen went black.

I even thought that laptop is completely turned off, but then i realized that led of my laptop which indicates that laptop is running is glowing. There is another led which was turned off and it usually blips when laptop's hard drive is in use. I waited a bit then i shutdown laptop by pressing and holding power button.

I know that shutdown laptop by pressing and holding power button is dangerous.

My question is that as hard drive of the laptop (SSD actually) is not in use and logs are disappeared is it correct to shutdown laptop by pressing and holding power button.

  • I wouldn't say it's correct, but the system is quite good at repairing any errors you might have introduced, so as a last resort it shouldn't give you any problems. – Bernt Ribbum Jul 21 '21 at 21:50

    After you reboot, `sudo journalctl -b -1 -e` will show you the last lines of logs from the previous boot. Also, just wait, and wait, ... There are some shutdown tasks that hang, and timeout after 30 minutes. When they timeout, information is logged. – waltinator Jul 21 '21 at 22:30

  • Thank you all very much! Yes i tried REISUB and pc didn't respond at all, but didn't tried journalctl command. Also it's goid to know that system is quite good at repairing possible errors but wanted to know how. (Any links would be appreciated) – Ali Jul 22 '21 at 15:00
