Currently waiting for internet line to be run so I've got a wifi hotspot for my laptop but would like to use the connection on my desktop PC. I've connected the desktop directly to the laptop via ethernet, set the laptop's ipv4 setting to share to other computers but get no connection on the desktop. Essentially I've done this and it hasn't worked

I did this for a while, once -- I installed "bridge" software to connect two network adapters in one computer, one connected to a cable modem and the other to an Ethernet switch, and thus shared a single connection with (at maximum) four computers.
