I've read a lot of posts about bad RAM or other reasons a computer might emit some beep codes upon boot, but this is different:

  1. It's not consistent. I can use the laptop for multiple days without having the issue, even through reboots or power cycles.

  2. When it's in this state there's nothing I can do to get it to boot other than walking away and coming back later. Leaving the computer off for some time (20-30 mins or more) typically allows it to be booted later without issue. The computer isn't overheating.

  3. The computer beeps continuously - not a beep code - with a black screen, no logo or BIOS, just a straight pattern of beeps about 1 every 3-4 seconds. It won't stop until I force a hard shutdown by holding the power button down

  4. The computer seems to be "fine" in nearly every other respect.

  5. If I perform any kind of Windows update, it's guaranteed to happen when the update forces you to reboot the computer.

The computer is a Dell Alienware m17x R3. It's quite dated nowadays as a gaming computer. Running Windows 10 Home edition.

I'm looking for some suggestions for what I can do to further narrow down / troubleshoot the issue in the hopes of either finding a workaround (how can I get it to boot when it's in this state) or an actual solution (make it stop doing that!) Even an understanding of what a continuous beep means - the screen is on but remains black.

Update: Fun Fact.

  • When performing a required Windows Update, and choosing "Update and Shut Down", it does those beeps once it attempts to shut down. This is surprising because I thought it was a BOOT issue, but this is on Shut Down as well.

Get the Dell Hardware Diagnostics on Bootable USB. When the screen goes black, boot with the Diagnostics and see if errors pop up. – John Dec 27 '22 at 22:44
