Recently I got an online job and I need to connect to their VPN. I got it done on Windows laptop by installing Shrew Soft VPN client (I know it's old, it's what they told me to use). Going to my Ubuntu Desktop, I tried using the settings software for VPN but now I'm stuck.

On Windows, I needed to input the Server Address (of course), the group name, and the pre-shared key. I do not see where I can put anything but the server address in either OpenVPN or PPTP options in Ubuntu. I don't have a certificate yet, but on Windows I didn't need it immediately. (Says I must get a key like a week later.)

To try to bypass this, I tried installing Shrew VPN onto Ubuntu. I downloaded the .tgz file from their website and used the tar command to unpack it, now I have no idea what to do with the file to run the application.

I need help either figuring out how to run the file I just un-packed or working with Ubuntu's VPN services to connect to this VPN.

  • ShrewVPN's [web site](https://www.shrew.net/static/help-2.1.x/vpnhelp.htm) says you have to compile the software from source. See their README file file for instructions. – user68186 Dec 04 '20 at 00:23
  • Also see questions like [What is a command to compile and run C++ programs?](https://askubuntu.com/questions/61408/what-is-a-command-to-compile-and-run-c-programs) and search for **how to compile** in this site. – user68186 Dec 04 '20 at 00:30
  • @user68186 So I figured out how to compile it, I did ```cmake -S ~/Downloads/ike```. After manually installing the dependencies, I believe the build worked because it says ```-- Configuring done -- Generating done-- Build files have been written to : /home/user ``` The README file says to run ```-F switch``` but I don't know where that goes to or what that really means. Any suggestions? – scarp Dec 09 '20 at 01:10
  • I have no idea. You may want to update your question with all the new information. Hopefully someone who knows more will help you with the updated question. – user68186 Dec 09 '20 at 02:51
