I was trying to upgrade from 20.10 to 21.04. I fully updated the system (no reboot was required), then ran do-release-upgrade:

In the end there was not enough space on /boot to continue:

My /boot is tiny (237M); Ubuntu's installer created it this way 5 years ago. There was only the current kernel left, and I'm already using COMPRESS=xz for the initramfs, so I had to remove memtest86+ to make some space. Then I re-ran do-release-upgrade:

This can't be right. Those 2633 packages must be from 21.04, and the updater did not restore the previous system state.

How should I continue? I don't think it's safe to just let apt upgrade all those packages and hope for the best...

    Your sources were changed -- see how they say "hirsute" now? Just change them back. Alternately, you can take this opportunity to back up your data and then resize your partitions properly. – user535733 Jun 22 '21 at 23:08
  • Thanks. Changed them back to "groovy", and the upgrade ran fine - until it wanted *just 7k more* space in /boot... again. Time to go with plan B and just do a fresh install. I've got backups and another box running 21.04 for reference. Resizing partitions is a major PITA with full disk encryption. – Zilk Jun 22 '21 at 23:25

  • It does not answer the question. 1) The point of my question was not the missing space. 2) The linked question suggests making space by removing unneeded kernels, which I do not have. – Zilk Jun 23 '21 at 08:13
