In 2020, I have Lenovo that was preinstalled with Ubuntu. I have used my computer all the time since I bought it. I have much, but not all, of my data, backed up on an external hard drive as be my data. Recently, I tried to update to a new version of Ubuntu. Idiotically, I did not save my all my most recent data to my external hard drive before re-updating. The update was aborted because of some glitches in my system.

I folded down the screen of my computer. Later when I went to log in to my computer, I could not log on to my computer as anymore. When I restarted the computer it did not boot up. I had to choose to reboot from the factory default.

Is there any way to retrieve my data at this point? Or is this just a hard lesson learned?

Please explain how you reboot Ubuntu to factory default. Did your computer come from the factory with Ubuntu? Since then have you used the computer? Add these information [in your question](https://askubuntu.com/posts/1424544/edit). – user68186 Aug 19 '22 at 17:52

I don't think there is a way short of file recovery. See [How to recover files?](https://askubuntu.com/questions/3883/how-to-recover-deleted-files) – user68186 Aug 19 '22 at 18:22
  • @user68186. I am running testdisk. I have to select a media . The media look much the same: Disk /dev/loopX. Here, X is a number. Should I choose the highest number that I can for X? – Michael Levy Aug 19 '22 at 20:26
  • I have not used testdisk. You may want to ask a new question. – user68186 Aug 19 '22 at 21:37
