Yes, question on how to capture a webcam picture from the command line has been answered before.

However, all the answers I could find are basically just about pulling the trigger on the camera. I want to also control the cameras parameters, such as shutter speed, brightness, focus... as much as the camera allows.

The reason is that I want to create a time lapse and I want all those parameters to stay consistent over a long time, so I can't rely on the web cam's auto mode.

Is it possible to control a web cam via Terminal like that? If so, what should I watch out for, when buying the Hardware? What Software would I need?

  • I am not looking for a product recommendation, but looking for things like: is there a console application that supports remote controlling camera settings like that? Does the camera need to support a certain standard for this to work? Are there maybe open source camera driver libraries or something like that? – Philipp Aug 27 '23 at 06:18
