DisplayLink is a computer graphics company that specializes in USB graphics hardware. The Linux kernel ships with drivers for DisplayLink devices.

DisplayLink produces USB to video chipsets, which are built into monitors, display adapters and laptop docking stations by many different vendors. The same driver software works regardless of the brand.

With Ubuntu, a "green screen" on plugging in a DisplayLink device indicates the Kernel has recognized it. Getting X windows to work has proven more challenging for many people, and is the subject of many AskUbuntu questions.

  • Dave Airlie looked at DisplayLinks' USB 3.0 protocol which seems to be based on HDCP. No functional open source driver yet.
  • DisplayLink officially published a closed source driver with initial support for Ubuntu 14.04 in July/August 2015.
