Coinbase is a US-based Bitcoin company. They offer a custodial web wallet and exchange service.

The Coinbase company should not be confused with either of the following uses of coinbase:

  • coinbase transaction: "The first transaction in a block. Always created by a miner, it includes a single coinbase."1 It is the generation transaction for a new block.
  • coinbase field: "A special field used as the sole input for coinbase transactions. The coinbase allows claiming the block reward and provides up to 100 bytes for arbitrary data."2
