Questions tagged [tone-squelch]

Tone squelch, or CTCSS (Continuous Tone-Coded Squelch System) is a mechanism by which the presence of a specific frequency in the transmitted audio is used to open a receiver squelch, rather than relying simply on the presence of a strong enough signal.

Why are PL tones strange numbers?

PL tones have very specific odd numbers with a decimal place like 103.5 or 107.2 or 88.5. The only PL tone that does not have this decimal is the 100.0 hertz tone. Why don't they just use integers with a standard increment of lets say 10 hertz so…

Why don't I hear the CTCSS tones when listening on the repeater input frequency?

I am newly licensed (Technician) and bought a UV-5RA as a cheap way to check out what's going on in my area and see if I'm finding it interesting enough to get a better UHF/VHF HT. The other day I was listening to a conversation happening on a local…

PL tone removal?

How are PL tones (CTSS, et.al.) typically removed from the audio of received VHF FM repeater signals? Is it done with a fixed high-pass filter? Or a notch, when using a transceiver with the PL tone configured correctly? Or dynamically, by assuming…

Kenwood TH-D72A: what's the difference between Tone and CTCSS?

Kenwood TH-D72A supports 3 types of tone: Tone, CTCSS and DCS. What is the difference between Tone and CTCSS? As far as I know CTCSS is basically a continuous transmission of a given low frequency signal mixed with the voice. So it's basically a…

Why does P25 occasionally break through tone squelch on my analog HTs?

When listening to our local repeater, which is now a combined P25/analog machine, every once in a while my squelch opens to a blast of digital noise. I've noticed this problem with at least two different Baofeng radios (a UV-3R+ and a UV-82). I have…

Can two FM radios transmit two separate PL tones, and be received by two radios with matching PL tones? Or will the receivers hear a mix of the two, or nothing at all?

How do PL tones make it through so much noise?

So sometimes I hear people trying to get into a repeater with pure noise, and no audible audio on their transmission. With the repeaters that require a PL tone, how can the PL tones get through all of that noise if I can barely get DTMF through…
