I run Ubuntu Desktop 16.04 as my host machine. I use Virtual Box to run Ubuntu Server. I SSH to my Ubuntu Server virtual machine using NAT network with port forwarding.

With these settings I can SSH without an actual Internet connection but I can’t SSH with my modem turned off.

The problem is that I live in place with constant “power-cuts” (which basically means electricity board cutting down power). So when power went off although my laptop stays up with battery, my modem turns off, this breaks the connection between VirtualBox and the host machine. I use a D-link Modem.

Here is the out put of "ip addr show":

1: lo: <LOOPBACK,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 65536 qdisc noqueue state UNKNOWN group default qlen 1
link/loopback 00:00:00:00:00:00 brd 00:00:00:00:00:00
inet 127.0.0.1/8 scope host lo

2: enp7s0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast state UP group default qlen 1000

    inet6 fe80::a9a6:c6a7:8e7:86fd/64 scope link

3: wlp6s0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST> mtu 1500 qdisc noop state DOWN group default qlen 1000

    link/ether 0a:00:27:00:00:00 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff

I set up host only network but still I can’t SSH to the Virtual Machine. Here is the error I am getting:

ssh: connect to host 192.168.56.10 port 22: No route to host

  • I suppose your desktop is using network-manager. This might cause the problem while it shouldn't. Can you extend your question with the output of "ip addr show" for both cases? (while modem is running, while modem is powered off). – goteguru Jan 19 '17 at 23:31
  • i added output of "ip addr show" – faust_ Jan 19 '17 at 23:43
  • You should setup a second ethernet adapter as a “Host Only” adapter and SSH into that. [Details here](http://superuser.com/a/873309/167207). – Giacomo1968 Jan 19 '17 at 23:52
  • @JakeGould I did that but still I am not able to SSH to virtual machine. I run the command "ssh username@xx.xx.xx.x" , I don't know the port name. I – faust_ Jan 20 '17 at 00:03
  • and if you poweroff the modem, you see the same interfaces? Can't ssh is a bit under-defined. What's the error message? You can't route to the server ip? (ip route might help). Maybe you are using some server name instead of IP and your resolver can't find that (try connect with ip). There are too many possibilities. – goteguru Jan 20 '17 at 00:12
  • @goteguru i am using ip not server name. – faust_ Jan 20 '17 at 00:15
  • @faust_ You don’t need a port name. If you setup a host only adapter properly you will have a static IP address on that machine you SSH top. Nothing complex. – Giacomo1968 Jan 20 '17 at 00:58
  • Possible duplicate of [How to do networking between virtual machines in VirtualBox?](http://superuser.com/questions/119732/how-to-do-networking-between-virtual-machines-in-virtualbox) – Giacomo1968 Jan 20 '17 at 00:59

  • @JakeGould I read all other posts on superuser and stackoverflow, nothing is helping me fix this – faust_ Jan 20 '17 at 08:50
  • I don’t know where to begin. Will say two glaring issues: Your output of `ifconfig` are simply from your host machine and *not* within the Virtual Machine you wish to connect to. If if you claim to have “read all other posts”then you should know that setting up a host only adapter requires two major things: Setting up the Virtual Box machine to have a second adapter on the host side and then setting networking settings *within* the Virtual Machine itself. Also, you seem to have port forwarding setup on the Virtual Box machine? I really don’t know what to say; your setup seems like a mess. – Giacomo1968 Jan 20 '17 at 12:33
  • @JakeGould actually the second pic (ifconfig output) is from my virtual machine. Here is the pastebinit : http://paste.ubuntu.com/23833298/ – faust_ Jan 20 '17 at 13:29
  • @faust_ If that second screenshot is from your virtual machine, your second ethernet adapter is not properly setup in the system. Long story short: It seems your setup is a mess. I have no idea what you did, but it seems like you just followed every tutorial/guide and just arbitrarily added and changed things without really knowing what you are doing. Setting up a second ethernet adapter is not hard. My suggestion? Start from scratch on a clean VM and very carefully [follow the instructions shown here](http://superuser.com/a/873309/167207). If you do that, you should be able to SSH fine. – Giacomo1968 Jan 20 '17 at 15:25
  • @faust_ Then *after* you get that setup working, look at what works there and then look at your already setup machine and see what needs to be adjusted. That’s all anyone here can advise or help you with. Best of luck! Not replying to any more comments. – Giacomo1968 Jan 20 '17 at 15:26

you have an IP 192.168.56.10 in your ubuntu16 lo device. That should be 127.0.0.1. you may (temporarily ) change it with ip addr del 192.168.56.10 dev lo and restore the right version with ip addr add 127.0.0.1 dev lo. According to your screenshots, your host machine cannot route the right address. If the above wont help, please add your routing tables (ip route show) on both machines. – goteguru Jan 20 '17 at 16:58
