I'm having trouble installing the Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC evaluation version. At the end of the installation, I am still taken through tons of dark patterns regarding consumer-level features, and am not able to disable telemetry (only the "Basic" level is offered) either.

Is this expected behavior, or is my install somehow messed up and is somehow turning into a retail version (the machine most likely had a retail version of Windows 10 installed - could it be silently picking the product key from there instead)?

  • Some bios's have a key embeded and will be used when installing>>>>>>https://superuser.com/questions/1020961/prevent-windows-10-installer-from-using-the-preinstalled-serial-key-without-disa – Moab Apr 03 '21 at 20:07

Windows makes use of telemetry data to understand what is happening and going wrong with its systems.

You can control privacy settings but you cannot eliminate all telemetry data. Privacy settings can reduce it to basic.

Windows has had this functionality for years and Microsoft uses it (source: Microsoft seminars in Redmond). Companies can use this telemetry data if they wish for their users and computers.

There is a Group Policy you can explore, but I am not certain that can remove all telemetry. It is aggregate data and not personalized in any way. We are not identified.

Telemetry data is the key way that Windows Reliability errors (WER data) gets reported and fixed (Thankfully).

  • My understanding is that Enterprise editions specifically allow disabling all telemetry - is this no longer the case? – André Borie Apr 03 '21 at 22:10
  • No. Telemetry has been part of Windows 10 since its inception (and I think partly in Windows 8 as well). It cannot be entirely eliminated. Privacy settings can reduce it to basic. – John Apr 03 '21 at 22:17
  • I did amend my answer to note that the data is aggregated and not personal. – John Apr 03 '21 at 22:22
