Sponsored by Google, WebM is a new protocol used to convert audio/video files to HTML 5 compliant feeds.

The WebM audio/video format is one of the latest file formats announced for HTML 5 video conversion and feed compliance. To help remove the reliance on Flash based video feeds, Google, and other companies, have sponsored the development of WebM in the hopes it will become one of the new defacto standards for HTML5.

Browser that natively support WebM include:

  • FireFox 4 +
  • Opera 10.6 +
  • Google Chrome (native)

Safari on MacOSX, unfortunately does not fully support WebM, as it uses QuickTime to convert and encode/play audio/video files on the Macintosh.

Does WebM have its own delivery method? How does it relate to RTMP and HTTP Live Streaming?

When I read up on streaming media formats and packaging methods, I am confused by the way WebM is described as mutually exclusive to RTMP and HTTP Live Streaming. From my understanding, WebM is a video format, like a way of encoding a video file,…
