A device for sending a digital signal down an analog line, such as a telephone line, DSL, cable etc.

Name comes from modulator-demodulator. In the case of a phone modem, the digital data is converted (or modulated) into sounds which can be transmitted over a voice telephone line. The modem at the other end converts the sounds back into data (demodulation).
